A Gen Z Art Student's Guide to New Annual 2026
By New Annual's University of Newcastle (UoN) career-ready placement student, Nevena.
As a Bachelor of Art student at UoN who loves exploring Newcastle, from dropping by the occasional op shop, and enjoying a night of jazz at the Underground, to sunset swims at Bar Beach, I'm always looking for a fun getaway on the weekends with my friends or a way to wind down after my classes during the week.
As the holidays come to an end and semester 2 looms around the corner, all of us university students will need a pick-me-up in the middle of semester.
What better way to upgrade your hobby game, have fun, and engage with the local art scene here in Newcastle than New Annual, running for ten days from 25th Sep to 4th Oct and showcasing art of all mediums from unique voices and local creatives.
Here are my top picks for New Annual 2026, with a mix of free and ticketed events, curated with students and young creatives in mind. Whether you bring your friends or family or go solo, New Annual, supported by the University of Newcastle, is a great way to let loose and feel inspired. If you're a creative at heart like me, these might pique your interest.
